Review Lady Midnight

“In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.
A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best of her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?”
OMG how exciting is that? More adventures in the Shadow World – yaaay! The Dark Artifices series continues only five years after the “Dark War”, which happened in the sixth and last book of The Mortal Instruments and so it connects TMI and the amazing The Infernal Devices trilogy with overlapping characters and plot twists. And yes, you should read those books first, otherwise you will miss many connections and the throwbacks will make less sense. Also, especially in the end of Lady Midnight, many characters of the other novels will appear and this just let my fandom heart skip a beat!
The plot was a bit too predictable sometimes, Cassandra Clare seems to have a few elements she’s worked into every book series she had written – complex triangle relationships, forbidden love and so on. What’s new is the strong family bond of the Blackthorns! Julian’s love for his siblings is just heart melting.  Clare has written absolutely convincing characters, as always!

While reading City of Heavenly Fire (Book 6 of The Mortal Instruments) we were first introduced to Emma and the Blackthorns, but they were side characters and for me, personally, in that moment only Jace, Clary and the others mattered. But now Emma and Julian are the main characters -They have their weaknesses and their strengths as well as individuality.

We have a super strong female lead, Emma Carstairs, who’s tough and strong from the beginning on and always focused on finding the murderer of her parents. Even the side characters are so well written, they all have an individual temper and storylines. But my absolute favorite is Emma’s parabatai Julian! He’s just as lovely as he is mysterious, with all his lies and secrets he even kept from Emma. Especially his past makes this character so convincing, you just have to empathize with him.
And there is a difference between having your heart break and having your soul shatter.”

With this novel, Clare will drag you way deeper into the Shadow World – We learn much more about the Faerie and the dark magic of the downworlders and I’m pretty sure the next books will offer even more secrets of this universe.
All in all, this book is the perfect prelude/opening of a new trilogy and I’m so ready for the next one!
There were some plot twists that I didn't see coming at all and made me gasp more than once! Lady Midnight is full of surprises, it's funny, it's heart breaking, it's got a fantastic storyline and an amazing setting. It will make you feel the full range of emotions – and that’s perfect!

  1. Hallo Celine,

    Larissa von The Book Hubble
